Beskrivelse
R. kaempferi (Tsutsusi) (-26 °C). En meget hårdfør, delvis løvfældende Japansk art (azalea) med ret kraftig vækst, som med alderen bliver meget karakteristisk opdelt i “etager”. Blomstrer i maj mad åbne teglrøde blomster i stor mængde. De store “sommerblade” farver smukt om efteråret før løvfald, kun en lille roset af små overvintrende blade bibeholdes omkring knopperne. Vokser på de fleste bjerge i Japan, bla. i det kolde Hokkaido, Japan.

Shrub, 1–3 m; young shoots and petioles densely covered with adpressed flattened red-brown hairs. Leaves of two kinds; spring leaves deciduous, 2–4(–5) × 1–2.5 cm, lanceolate to elliptic, apex acute or obtuse, both surfaces covered with stiff hairs especially on midrib; summer leaves persistent or deciduous, 1–2 × 0.5–1 cm. Pedicels densely covered with adpressed brown stiff hairs. Flowers 2–3 per inflorescence; calyx 3–5 mm; corolla red (in cultivated forms from pink to salmon-red), funnel-shaped, 20–30 mm; stamens 5(–6); ovary densely covered with stiff red-brown hairs, style glabrous.
